How do I KNOW that the Bible and Yoga fit together like hand-in-glove? By applying the principles of “correct perception” as described in Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra 1.7. Patañjali states that correct perception or right knowledge comes from direct sensory input (pratyakṣa), inference (anumāna), and reliable/trustworthy testimony (āgamāḥ)... Patañjali also gives these criteria for right knowledge in the order of their importance and rank regarding their authenticity/validity/reliability/correctness, which means your direct sensory input (direct, first-hand perception based on actual experience and exposure) is what you should rely on first for RIGHT KNOWLEDGE or CORRECT PERCEPTION. By building your knowledge starting with what you sense, experience, and witness first-hand, you will be able to make inferences based on sound reasoning (connecting relevant dots), which will also endow you with the discernment to know what third-party sources are valid and trustworthy testimony. Let’s begin with pratyakṣa to witness how the Bible and Yoga fit like hand-in-glove beginning with what our senses tell us, LOOKING with eyes that can see and LISTENING with ears that can hear.
First, consider the meaning of the word Yoga. Merriam-Webster gives the origin as (Sanskrit) literally, yoking, from yunakti “he yokes” akin to Latin jungere “to join“. It’s also worth mentioning that the Sanskrit root of yoga is yuj meaning “to join, unite, yoke” (you can sense the phonetic similarities this shares with Latin’s jungere). And when we look into how Merriam-Webster describes the meaning of yoke, we find its first definition given as “a wooden bar or frame by which TWO draft animals, typically OXEN, are joined at the heads or necks for working together.“ Additionally, dictionary.com offers these two definitions: 1) a device for joining together a PAIR of draft animals, especially OXEN, usually consisting of a crosspiece with two bow-shaped pieces, each enclosing the head of an animal; AND 2), a pair of draft animals fastened together by a yoke. You can use other dictionaries to find the same definitions referring to TWO DRAFT ANIMALS (OR A PAIR), USUALLY OXEN. These definitions are deliberate with their emphasis on TWO OXEN, not “a few” and not “several” but TWO, A PAIR(!) and not any other animal but OXEN. Look to see with your own eyes — pratyaksa! Now, it’s important to remember that language was spoken before it was written, so we must LISTEN to the sounds produced when we say words (In the beginning was the word… A-U-M). Don’t get lost and confused by spellings (which are literally “spells” that have the effect of hypnotizing the masses of individuals into powerlessness). I want you to regain your power by helping you reconnect with self and learn to trust your senses again - pratyaksa - to REMEMBER THE TRUTH that YOU ARE POWER. Say the word BIBLE out loud so you can hear for yourself with your own ears (again pratyakṣa). Now repeat it, but this time say it slowly emphasizing each syllable one at a time. What do you hear when you say BI-BLE? You hear BI + BULL. The prefix “BI” means “two” and BULLS are equivalent to OXEN, DRAFT ANIMALS (although an Ox is a very special kind of bull we’ll get into when we talk about the “Christos”). Hearing the actual sound pronounced with our own ears when we say the name of the Good Book is pratyakṣa. At this point you might be thinking, “Yea, that’s clever and all, but it’s only coincidence and doesn’t mean anything.” And I totally get that because I’m as skeptical as they come, believe me. But while I’m skeptical I’m not dismissive, I don’t make it my mission in life to ignore and deny what’s OBVIOUS and right in front of me. Let’s take it a step further, because BI + BULL may not be enough to prove anything necessarily. Matthew 13:34 says this – All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them. So, the BI-BULL is written in PARABLES. Do you hear it? Say “parables” slowly emphasizing each syllable one at a time. Ahhh… you get PAIR + ‘A (of) + BULLS. Still a coinkie-dink, right? What about the fact that the the 5 books of Moses in the Old Testament - the Pentateuch - is called the Torah, which is phonetically identical to Taurus, the BULL of the Zodiac, with the exception of the “s” added to Tauru+s. LISTEN with ears prepared to hear and don’t get confused by spellings. Further, any good yoga teacher will let you know that YOGA is about STEERING all the faculties/activities of your mind in ONE DIRECTION so as to give your FULL ATTENTION TO. Another interesting and undeniable fact is that the word STEER in noun form means “young ox, bullock, bull” and is further defined as “a male bovine that is castrated before sexual maturity” (a seed saving machine). In conclusion, aside from Yoga being understood as “union,” as it often is, it also means “to yoke” (which means “to steer”) where a yoke (noun) is a cross-piece joining TWO OXEN (a “pair of bulls”) at the neck. Phonetically, “Bible” sounds like BI + BULL and the Good Book is written in “par-a-bles,” which sounded out makes PAIR ‘A BULLS. So there is your UNDENIABLE, OBVIOUS, and uncomplicated connection shared by Yoga and the Bible that you can see with your own eyes and hear with your own ears, without having to take anyone’s word for it on blind faith. Ok, but where does this connection lead and what does it regard? In the greater context, this connection regards the Christos (Greek for “Good Oil” which is also the Greek ambrosia and Sanskrit amritam) and what it means to “save the seed” (brahmacharya in ashtanga) in order to heave it up to the Lamp (Lamb). Stick with me so you can see for yourself (PRATYAKSA) and connect your own dots (ANUMĀNA). I’m not here to tell anyone what to think, but I do hope to inspire you TO THINK for yourself, and ignite in you a desire to come fully alive.
