I love to revisit this analogy from time to time. As I get older, it continues to offer me new and deeper insights each time I come back to it.
You've probably heard it before, how it's said they train elephants in India. The process is to train elephants from a very early age by tying one end of a heavy rope or chain around one of its hind legs, and the other end of the rope or chain to a tree or stake planted deep in the ground. At first the young elephant, with its youthful and spirited exuberance, wants to run free and far, but finds that it is only able to go so far because of the rope. The elephant struggles with the heavy rope for a time, trying to get loose, but doesn't succeed and eventually gives up and gives in. When the elephant grows much bigger, it holds on to the memory that it cannot break free from the tether, and its masters are able to keep the full grown elephant bound by a string it could easily snap. What strings are keeping you tethered and bound to living a small life? How many beliefs have been instilled in you over your lifetime that make you think "It just cannot be done"? Seriously contemplating this question is the start of snapping the strings. We have to first be aware of the strings before we can clip them; otherwise we are like puppets dangling in the winds of life. The negative beliefs we have that we do not see, the ones that fly under the radar and craftily sabotage our desires and sour our vision, the ones that convince us we KNOW what's not possible, are the most insidious. They invisibly wreak uncontested havoc in our lives while never even being detected, let alone suspected and/or rejected. Although we all enter this world infant-sized, we are not born to be small. You are only limited (or tethered) by your beliefs and your imagination, as am I. It's time to snap the strings and snap out of the spell that holds us back. Don't make the world wait any longer. We need you! Cheers to your success! Damon Givehand

To cut to the chase, WHY? Because, among other commonly documented beneficial reasons, they are a “light” food. Light signifying two things: 1) meaning “not heavy” (as in excellent for getting to and maintaining your ideal weight), and 2) being symbolic of “knowledge” as a result of the phytonutrients and chlorophyll in dark leafy greens (you remember “photosynthesis” from your high school biology class, right? The process plants undergo to convert sunlight into useful energy we humans can consume to get vital fuel for living – we would not be able to exist without this process). The similarities between your blood and chlorophyll are astounding and have lots to do with keeping your blood clean and oxygenated for healthy brain function (getting back to “knowledge” and being able to “see the light”).
In our modern “civilized” world, one elephant-sized paradox is that people are overweight while at the same time starving from malnutrition (largely because of our deeply flawed mass food system and maladjusted societal mindset). A great way to counter malnutrition and support brain health for better thinking, is to eat dark green leafy savory smoothies. Some people have a natural affinity for savory, while others prefer sweet green smoothies. I like both, but recognize the superiority of savory. After several consecutive days of eating just savory green smoothies, I notice a considerable shift in my physical energy and mental clarity. The difference is so great and the savory feeling is so amazing that I encourage anyone who has only eaten sweet green smoothies to get over their addiction and devotion to sweet tastes, and give it a try. If you are a sweet green smoothie person, the taste of savory might be a challenge for you at first. This might help: In my early smoothie days I discovered that when I did longer fasts (7-10 days) that my taste buds had a chance to reset and I took to savory green smoothies better once I came off the fast. Now, I actually really enjoy the flavor of savory green smoothies and mix it up with savory and sweet – I gotta admit, I make a mean sweet green smoothie! If you are not currently a smoothie indulger, and are nervous about the “green” stuff in the smoothies, sweet green smoothies might be the way for you to start out, unless of course you are already a savory flavor lover. While my opinion is that savory green smoothies reign supreme in terms of health benefits, I in no way mean to diminish the benefits of sweet green smoothies, as sweet green smoothies are certainly superior to the S.A.D. (Standard American Diet) eating habits of our society, and are a really close 2nd to savory. If savory green smoothies rank a full 10 on a 10 point scale, then sweet green smoothies are a 9.9, while the S.A.D. practice of the majority is a measly 0.1 – 3 (anything lower than that people would drop dead on the spot, instead the S.A.D. way allows people to barely hang on to life in overweight conditions that are essentially incubators for disease while people pop antacids and work jobs that give medical “benefits” (what a cleaver word, “benefits” – who’s benefiting exactly? It’s all too often just a matter of time before S.A.D. people are diagnosed with “something” – is that the benefit? Maybe for the hospitals, insurance agencies, and pharmaceutical companies; but for the individual I think not, and it’s rather quite SAD -- the individual ONLY benefits when she or he decides to take charge of their eating and health habits). Worried about where your protein will come from? I never give it a second thought, just like our ancestors who thrived for millions of years on this planet without giving protein a second thought. I’m just sure to rotate my greens so I get all the protein I need. Most people have no idea what protein even is or does, and mindlessly repeat things they heard before about where to get protein from and how much protein they need (and then want to argue and preach to you about it with total conviction). For millions of years we humans lived off the vegetation of our planet, protein not even being a concept, and we were just fine; then over the last century or so, marketing forces have eased their way into education to hijack and influence the habits, choices, and beliefs of unsuspecting citizens, and all of a sudden, with all the so-called technological advances, we are sicker than ever in the history of mankind and we want to act like we have no idea why. If you’ve struggled with weight in the past, try eating this way for a few months and see if the pounds don’t literally melt away (as long as you eliminate that S.A.D. stuff – just remember that you can’t live in both worlds, you have to choose if you want to lose). More good news is that eating this way means you do not have to count calories or “watch” your weight. Just eat like you give a darn about yourself, stop putting fake foods in your body, and live your life like you were meant to live it without worry. When you do right, there is nothing to worry about. You only need to worry when you aren’t doing right. If you really want to revolutionize your health, eat like this and take up yoga – whoa! Talk about change for the better… you won’t believe the favorable results you feel and see! Got questions? Let me know. What do I use to make my smoothies and WHY? I own and use a VitaMix 5200 to make my smoothies. Keep in mind they are called “smoothies” for a reason. If you are able to invest in a high powered blender, I highly recommend it. The investment will be worth it if you are serious about taking charge of your health. Low end blenders leave the so-called smoothies grainy with lots left over that needs to be chewed – not the kind of smoothie experience that will keep you a green smoothie convert and lover (but it’s still a million times better than the S.A.D. so the intelligent thing might be to do what you have to do until you are able to save up for the best blender for the job). High end blenders (there are only a couple I think are capable of delivering the highest quality results, with VitaMix being my top choice) pulverize the greens, rupturing the cell walls, essentially putting them into a “pre-digested” state, making the smoothie nutrients more easily assimilated during digestion, AND giving the smoothie a “smooth” and creamy consistency (no grainy-ness or left over stuff to be chewed – although I still go through the motions of chewing while enjoying my smoothies).
