Yoga, first and foremost, is just a word, whose meaning is “union.” The word yoga is derived from the sanskrit root “yuj” which is also what the English word “yoke” is derived from, so yoga and yoke are essentially synonymous (although not necessarily the same parts of speech). Yuj also means “to join” or “to unite.”
When you look up the meaning of yoke in English dictionaries, you will find that it’s associated with the domesticated bovine work animal. According to dictionary.com a yoke is a device for joining together a pair of draft animals, especially oxen, usually consisting of a crosspiece with two bow-shaped pieces, each enclosing the head of an animal. As a verb, to yoke means to steer in a particular direction (interesting that the word "steer" as a noun refers to the bovine). So, yoga is the yoke, and a yoke is typically understood to be a device joining together a pair of oxen (the draft animals). Oxen are bulls (male bovine) who have been castrated and domesticated for heavy work. And remember, we’re talking about TWO oxen, a pair. That brings us to the question “What does yoga have to do with the Bible?” Glad you asked! Say “bible” slowly out loud, emphasizing each syllable, and it should become clear -- “BI-BULL.” The prefix bi- means “two,” so the Bible refers to TWO BULLS by its name. And what kind of stories is the Bible written in? Parables, or PAIR-OF-BULLS. Is it becoming clear? And we didn’t even mention the steer [(n.) male bovine castrated before maturity, and (v.) to guide the direction of], which should make Yoga stand out even more in this really interesting relationship it shares with the Bible. It goes soooooooo much deeper than that when we start talking about the christos and how to raise it, but I’ll stop there for now. Stay tuned! |
